Dental Sealants in Smithfield, NC
Back teeth (molars and premolars) in most individuals contain grooves and pits on the biting surface. These grooves can be thought of like grout in your bathroom. They are very hard to keep clean. To solve this issue, a thin film of tooth-colored coating, also called a sealant, is applied in those grooves and pits in order to provide protection and also make the teeth easier to clean.
After the sealant is applied, it keeps food debris and bacteria out of the deep grooves. This is typically done at an early age to prevent cavities, but can be done at any age to provide an additional layer of protection.
