Large fillings, as well as fractured teeth, create unique problems. In some cases, a dental onlay or inlay may be a better choice than traditional filling material. They, like dental crowns, provide additional protection and strength to a weakened tooth.
The distinction between an inlay and an onlay is that an inlay is used to repair a tooth within the cusp tips of the tooth (the bumps/pointy portion of your rear teeth). An onlay is similar to an inlay, except it covers more of the tooth, including the cusp points. Inlays and onlays can be created of tooth-colored materials (such as porcelain, composite resin, or zirconia) or metals such as gold.
