Your hygienist will determine if you have gum disease by measuring the pockets between the gum and the tooth. If these pocket exceed 3 mm and have bleeding with buildup, she will initiate gum therapy.
The method starts with the help of a local anesthetic to lessen any kind of discomfort. Then, with the help of a small device termed a "scaler," or an ultrasonic cleaner, the hygienist cleans beneath your gum line in order to cleanse plaque and tartar.
After the initial debridement of tartar, the root surfaces on the tooth are smoothed to eliminate areas that may be more prone to trap germs. If proper homecare and regular maintenance cleanings are followed, scaling and root planing will enable the gums to reattach themselves to the tooth structure again. Extra measures will be taken if the periodontal pockets remain even after scaling and root planing are performed. These measures can include antibiotic and/or laser therapy.
